Riven

Few champions demand as much mechanical polish as Riven. She is a manaless, melee fighter-assassin played in top lane and occasionally mid, whose power ceiling scales almost entirely with the hands of the player. Everything in her kit is short-cooldown, animation-cancelable and chainable, which is why her damage output looks modest on paper but devastating in practice.

The engine is her passive, Runic Blade: casting abilities charges her sword, and basic attacks spend those charges for bonus damage. Optimal Riven play therefore weaves an auto attack between every single spell. Broken Wings provides three separate dashes-and-strikes, the third knocking enemies back; Ki Burst is a point-blank AoE stun; Valor is a short dash that also blocks incoming damage, serving as both gap-closer and defensive tool. Her ultimate, Blade of the Exile, empowers her weapon with bonus attack damage and range, and grants one cast of Wind Slash — a ranged execute that hits harder the lower the target’s health.

Strengths and trade-offs

Riven’s strengths are burst, mobility and the freedom of having no resource bar: she can trade as often as her cooldowns allow. The trade-off is fragility relative to other bruisers and a 125 attack range that forces her to commit fully to every engagement. A missed Ki Burst stun usually means a lost trade.

She suits players who love execution-heavy champions — combo sequencing, animation cancels and split-second Valor blocks are the entire appeal. When mastered, she can 1v1 nearly any top laner and dive backlines with a full four-dash combo.
