Deadly Spines erupts from the ground across an area, Grasping Roots travels through the ground rather than over it, and plants attack as independent units. Mel’s defensive identity is built for a different kind of opponent, and 59.3% across 280 support games on patch 16.13.1 shows what that costs her.

Reach and resistances point the same direction. Zyra threatens from 575 against 550, both champions carry 30 base magic resist, and Mel starts on 21 armor with no way to stop plant damage once it is on the field. Her health pool is the larger one — 630 at level 1 and 2,313 at level 18 against 574 and 2,155 — but that advantage arrives too late to decide short exchanges.

Mel’s real threat is Solar Snare rooting a target for Radiant Volley, and the answer is spacing rather than a defensive cooldown. Zyra’s 340 base move speed against 330 makes sidestepping the orb realistic, and Rampant Growth seeds placed in advance turn each dodged root into a punish window.
