The margin is not explained by raw defense, since Yone brings more health at level 18 at 2,405 against 2,330, more armor at 111.2 against 107.8, and a longer 175 attack range against 125.

It is explained by what each kit does while committed. Soul Unbound sends Yone’s spirit out of his body and forces it back when the ability ends, repeating a portion of the damage he dealt, and during that period his return position is known and fixed. Riven’s answer is Ki Burst timed on the snap-back, followed by the knockback on the third cast of Broken Wings, which separates him from the follow-up. Valor blocking incoming damage blunts Mortal Steel poke, and Blade of the Exile closes the range gap by granting bonus attack damage and range for its duration. Way of the Hunter adds magic damage on every second attack, which gives Riven’s 32 magic resist genuine value, and Yone operates on Flow while Riven pays nothing at all to cycle her abilities. The remaining threat is Fate Sealed, which blinks him behind the last champion in a line and pulls everyone hit toward him, so holding Valor for that moment is worth more than spending it on poke.
